I never knew a website could hurt someone.
When you're new to accessibility, it is easy to think it is only about blind people who use screen readers. After all, blind people have a really hard time on the web. They can't see the screen. They can't see the mouse pointer, so they can't use a mouse. They rely on screen readers for access. But can a website cause a user pain? Yes. I've seen it happen.
During this talk, Karl Groves will discuss users who are rarely considered and how designers and developers can help each of them through understanding the web itself.

Championing Digital Accessibility: The Pivotal Role of Leadership

This presentation will provide an overview for digital accessibility programs and will highlight the importance of executive leadership support for optimal success.
Public sector digital accessibility programs are critical for citizens and in supporting government employees. If government websites, digital forms, and digital documents are not accessible to all, we exclude some citizens by creating barriers to the information they need and their ability to transact with their government agencies. While the digital accessibility field is powered by dedicated and passionate professionals, programs are limited without the support of executive leadership. Government agencies and public universities’ leaders are instrumental in providing the appropriate resources for these programs and in advocating their importance.

This session will engage stakeholders with information that provides a humanistic perspective on accessibility best practices and implementation. Attendees will participate in a group discussion where they will create personas, identify arguments and challenges related to the adoption of accessibility best practices, and craft counterarguments to those challenges using the tools and information covered in this session.
